PicOfTheWeek: Burn Warning Rice

Ugh…not again…

It’s been one of those days. I’m recipe testing Arroz con Pollo, and I keep getting burn warnings. Grr…

Recipe coming as soon as I can figure out what I’m doing wrong. Until then, here are a few Instant Pot rice recipes to keep you busy:

Hi! I’m Mike Vrobel. I’m a dad and an enthusiastic home cook; an indie cookbook author and food blogger with a day job, a patient spouse, and three kids who would rather have hamburgers for dinner.

  1. Would this recipe be suitable to use a pot-in-pot method of cooking? I’ve been successful in the past with certain recipes that are too thick and cause burn notice.

I cook rice and pasta in non stick liner or use my new fave…avocado spray/oil. It has a 500 heat point and my rice/pasta dishes never get burn notice even when using regular stainless pot. I just lightly coat the bottom.. Love your site by the way!

    Dear Mike,

Love your site! I fixed the burned rice syndrome by turning off the Instant Pot when it is done , then using Alexa as a timer for the amount of time needed for steam release/ natural release. That way the bottom of the pot isn’t on.
No more burned or overbrowned rice on the bottom .

    • Thanks – but I’m not even getting that far; I’m getting a burn warning before the cooker pressurizes. It’s the chicken stock and rice – it’s too thick for the cooker. I just have to get my ratio right.

FYI I kept having problems with rice and pasta in my Instant Pot, so I ordered a non-stick coated inner pan which has helped a lot.
