Laura is the writer behind HipPressureCooking.com, and is an official Friend of DadCooksDinner. I love her creative take on pressure cooking, and her thorough approach to testing pressure cookers.

Her first cookbook, The Everything Healthy Pressure Cooker Cookbook, came out a few months back, and was kind enough to send me a copy. So we’re having a giveaway!

My family pressure cooker story

This story is from my aunt, who shared it with me after she read one of my pressure cooker recipes.

My grandmother Mim was at church with the rest of the family. They had just sat down in the pew when she jumped out of her seat and hurried out of the church without saying a word.

Granddad, my aunts, and my uncle were looking back and forth at each other, wondering what was going on. She came back twenty minutes later and sat down as if nothing happened. They were all curious, but she just shushed them when they tried to ask her questions – it was in the middle of mass after all.

When the service was over, she confessed. In the rush to get everyone out the door for church, she forgot to turn off the burner under the pressure cooker. She remembered right after she sat down – there was a bomb ticking in her kitchen. Luckily, she got home to find the pressure valves hissing away, letting steam escape the cooker. She took a deep breath, turned off the burner, and went back to church.

  1. I only just received my first pressure cooker for Christmas. All of my time, so far, has been spent drooling over various recipes. My goal was originally to get into canning, but the notion of having meals that would have taken hours to make ready in 20 minutes really got my attention.

    So far, my best pressure cooker story comes from my inability to read directions. I purchased an electric model – a 6 in one’er if you will. Now, I should have realized that if it is also a crockpot, it probably has a keep warm feature on it. But no, I didn’t. So the 2nd time I use it, it came up to pressure faster than I thought and my cluck cluck was cooked faster than the side dish in the oven. Not wanting to over cook, I released the pressure and let it set and get cold. You would think with an oven, 6-in-1, two crockpots, a nuker, a stove _ I might get everything on the table warm and at the same time! Still learning.

    My favorite is making eggplant dip per Laura’s recipe and people thinking that I spent hours roasting the eggplant. So easy and so rewarding!!

    My pressure cooker memories are Salisbury steak and mushy vegetables. I knew when my mom broke out the pressure cooker there was going to be something unpleasant to eat for dinner. From that experience I never considered using a pressure cooker… until last month’s Cook’s Illustrated came out and caused me to reevaluate. I found DadCooksDinner with just a little more research and decided it was time to dive in.

    I made some home made chicken stock in my brand new Fissler Vitaquick PC (thank you Santa). I used the some of it in my pressure cooker Red Beans and Rice (http://2for66.blogspot.com/2013/01/pressure-cooker-red-beans-and-rice.html). This has been a 5 star recipe in my house made with canned chicken stock and simmered in an open pan for 2 1/2 hours. Now I feel like I’ve reached a Spinal Tap (this amp goes to 11) cooking moment. The PC preparation made with PC home made stock is one notch better.

    Also, it’s true. Every time I talk about pressure cookers, someone has a story to tell. Your web site and Laura’s will help change the narrative.

  5. I just purchased my first pressure cooker at the end of last year, specifically to make a recipe you posted. Loved it so much that I’m eager to learn and cook some great stuff!

    I don’t really have a good pressure cooker story. I’ve only been pressure cooking for a couple years. However, I CAN tell you this and that is I bought my first (and only) pressure cooker after searching the internet for short ribs recipes. I had a hankering that would not go away but had always subscribed to the thought that short ribs were something you could only have on weekends when you had HOURS of time to cook them. That’s when I stumbled upon YOUR recipe (https://www.dadcooksdinner.com/2010/03/pressure-cooker-short-ribs.html). Short ribs in 1 hour? Yes, please! So I went to Sears that day and bought a simple 6-quart Presto stovetop. Thanks to you that started my pressure cooking ever since and I’ve made your short ribs 3 or 4 times now whenever I want to impress dinner guests with minimal effort and time! I love Laura’s blog too. Hers is my go-to site for pressure cooking answers and encouragement. I’d love to win the giveaway of her cookbook, but if I don’t that’s ok. I’ll gift it to myself next year!

    Ooohhhh!!! Hope I win the cookbook because I just got a pressure cooker for Christmas. I remember the one my dad had when I was a kid, and I was NOT allowed in the kitchen while it was on. I was afraid of getting one because of that, but after seeing several demonstrations of the electric ones, I asked for one for Christmas and got it! YAY! First thing I made was whole potatoes in 10 minutes that almost mashed themselves! I am loving it so far, and this cookbook would help me make the most of it! Thanks for hosting this giveaway!

    I want to win……I love cookbooks and I love my pressure cooker…..use it every day. I am also trying my best to cook healthy…..I do soups for my 92 year old Mom……they are so good out of the PC….and nutrutious!

    I don’t have a pressure cooker and have never used one. I’m hopefully getting one soon.

    I can only recount memories from what I’ve watched on TV… so there was that time when I saw the handle fall off the cooker and no one being able to get the food out šŸ™‚

    My grandmother used her large pressure cooker for all kinds of canning: vegetables, fruits, jellies, jams. The family’s favorite was her pickled beets, but my favorite were the dill pickles. I now have a pressure cooker and my favorite meals to prepare in it are chili recipes and posole recipes. I also love how easy is it to use my own beans instead of buying canned beans.     The first time I used a pressure cooker, I was at my boyfriend’s parents house. I followed directions to a TEE! (Er.) I actually still do not know how my pot roast ended up everywhere. Peas and carrots as far as the eye could see. SUPER, super fun and not embarrassing at all. Anyway, I swear it was the cooker. I got one for Christmas (from guess who?) and I have used it since with no problem.

Was using my pressure cooker only for cooking artichokes,but purchased an electric one from QVC a few years back.Love,but don’t use nearly enough.(great recipe for stew was about it)Until…….your website.Now the only way I use beans is to brine & use the pressure cooker.So much cheaper(organic) & better.     No real mishaps to relate, but I’ve heard stories about my grandmother’s one attempt to use a pressure cooker. It did not go well, and the whole thing, dinner and all, ended up in the trash!     My grandmother, my mother and my aunts all used pressure cookers but I have no interesting stories or mishaps. I’ve been watching people cook w/pressure cookers or using one of my own my entire life.

    I don’t have a pressure cooker story. (Maybe that’s a good thing?) I have only been pressure cooking now for about two years after coming across your recipe for pressure cooker short ribs. When I saw that my craving for short ribs could be satisfied in 1 hour I bought a pressure cooker that very day. I have made them 3 or 4 times now and they are always, always a hit! Thanks for making me look good!

    hippressurecooking.com is my go-to website for pressure cooker answers and also for my continuing pressure cooker education (who knew perfect hard-boiled eggs could be done with FRESH eggs?). I would love to win her cookbook!

  23. I had been coveting a Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker for a LONG time and my fiance surprised me with the 8 qt stockpot “just cuz,” no birthday or Christmas needed. I use it all the time and I think he’s been eyeing it since seeing (and tasting) all the delicious goodies I’ve been making in it. Just this Sunday, he made a rich, delicious beef stew in it. We may need two now since I’m not one to share my kitchen gadgets.

  24. I absolultely love my PC and I keep trying to convince friends and coworkers that they need one. Unfortunately, they’re usually associated with danger and not convenience due to the old models.
    I have no mishaps to report as far as the PC exploding, etc., but I did screw up a recipe pretty bad once. Actually, it was the pressure cooker pho recipe from this very blog! I used more bones than the recipe called for and a spice pack that wasn’t so great and ended up with a nasty soup and a smelly gasket on the PC for weeks. I had to end up buying a new gasket due to my idiocy.
    BTW…I love both blogs! Thanks!

  25. I just bought a pressure cooker and my first recipe was YOURS (beef shank “osso bucco”) and it was amazing. The cooker is a very foreign object to me so I’d love a cookbook:)

  26. I LOVE my pressure cooker!

    I have a Fagor stove-top 6 qt. & 10 qt.
    I love that I can cook things quickly at low temp. I’m considering taking it camping (less fuel consumption).

  27. My mother had an large, old pressure cooker that she used for canning. She was pretty scared of it, but produced amazing preserves.

    I got a pressure cooker for Christmas a few years ago and have NEVER even used it, although I would love to. I don’t have any idea what I’m doing and would love this book! I don’t really have a pressure cooker story except eating at my husband’s grandma’s house, where meals she cooked were always, uh, interesting… and never tasted very good, but there was one day when she made pork chops in the pressure cooker and it was the best meal I have ever eaten at her house.

    This probably sounds worse than it was, but I just want to say no dogs were harmed in the making of this story. My dad’s mom and sister were over (mutual detestment) and mom had corned beef and cabbage simmering away, she stepped out of the kitchen and KA-BLAM holy cow, was that a loud blast. The dog started yelping, so we pretty much trampled over the wicked grandmother and aunt to make sure the schnauzer was okay (he was). So were evil relatives, but that’s not the pressure cooker’s fault, evil will live on as it is wont to do. šŸ˜‰ Hideous mess to clean up, the smell was horrendous and we had to repaint the walls and ceilings to get all of the grease marks off.
